Modern Infrastructure Management: UPM Presents the Programme for Its 2026 Technical Event
The School of Civil Engineering at the Technical University of Madrid (UPM) will host the technical event “Modern Infrastructure Management: Challenges and Opportunities” on November 12, 2026. The event will focus on asset management, digitalization, and technological innovation in the civil engineering sector.
Organized by the UPM School of Civil Engineering and the Agustín de Betancourt Foundation, the event will bring together professionals from public authorities, companies, and universities to examine the main challenges associated with infrastructure planning, maintenance, and life-cycle management.
The event will address the transition from traditional maintenance models towards data-driven infrastructure management, aimed at improving decision-making, optimizing investments, and enhancing the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of infrastructure assets.
Five Strategic Sectors for Modern Infrastructure Management
The event programme is structured into five technical sessions covering roads, railways, airports, dams, and ports, all of which are essential sectors for economic development and the provision of key services.
The planned agenda is as follows:
- 09:00 | Roads: Road asset management, maintenance, safety, resilience, and risk-based investment prioritization.
- 10:30 | Coffee Break.
- 11:00 | Railways: Maintenance, reliability, availability, and optimization of data-driven decision-making.
- 12:30 | Airports: Integrated airport infrastructure management, safety, and operational continuity.
- 14:00 | Networking Reception: An opportunity for professional networking, depending on the registration category.
- 15:00 | Dams: Safety, intelligent structural monitoring, maintenance, and hydraulic asset management.
- 16:30 | Ports: Digitalization of maritime infrastructure, digital twins, and port asset optimization.
Each session will last 80 minutes and will combine a 30-minute keynote presentation, a 30-minute panel discussion featuring representatives from public authorities, industry, and academia, and a 20-minute Q&A session.
This format will encourage the exchange of experiences and the discussion of practical solutions applicable to different areas of infrastructure management.
Digitalization, Innovation, and Data-Driven Asset Management
One of the event’s main areas of focus will be the application of emerging technologies to improve infrastructure assessment, maintenance, and performance throughout its entire life cycle.
The integration of digital inventories, infrastructure inspection systems, data analytics tools, artificial intelligence, and digital twins is transforming traditional asset management models.
These technologies provide more accurate information on infrastructure conditions, help anticipate maintenance needs, and support the development of maintenance and investment strategies based on technical, economic, and risk-related criteria.
In this context, RAUROS specializes in civil engineering, infrastructure inspection technologies, and road asset management systems, contributing to more efficient infrastructure management based on technical knowledge and reliable data.
A Platform for Collaboration Between Public Authorities, Industry, and Academia
The event will feature representatives from public institutions and infrastructure organizations, including the Directorate-General for Roads, ADIF, RENFE, the Directorate-General for Water, and Puertos del Estado (Spanish State Ports Authority).
The event aims to encourage the exchange of knowledge and experiences among key stakeholders in the sector, promoting a shared vision of the challenges associated with digital transformation, sustainability, and the modernization of asset management.
